New Cruise Ship Terminal in San Diego

Margeurite Elicone, a San Diego Port Disctrict spokeswoman, has declared that the construction contract has been awarded to Jaynes Corporation for a new cruise ship terminal last week. Jaynes Corp., which has offices throughout the Southwest, will begin construction early next month.

Commercial projects such as the National City Public Library, Sharp Grossmont Hospital's crital care in La Mesa and the Village Walk retail center at Eastlake in Chula Vista are some of the builds by Jaynes Corp which is one of the 14 bidders for the terminal project.

With an estimated cost of more than $21 million, the new terminal will be built on Broadway Pier and is expected to be finished by 2011. Designed by Miami-based Bermello Ajamil & Partners, a 52,000 square foot cruise ship terminal is expected to be operational by that same year.

The project has been contreversial as there are some proponents that announces that the terminal will blog views of San Diego Bay and would violate the spirit of a 2005 waterfront makeover plan to show the pier as a public plaza. But officials from the port says that the pier and terminal can be visited and used by the public when ships are not in.
